Physical Health

  • Windsurfing provides a full body workout but specifically targets the lower back, forearms and shoulders.
  • Learning to balance is great for core muscle strength as well as leg muscles.
  • As a beginner you may find yourself falling off the board quite a lot, but remember climbing back up is great for upper body strength!
  • As you improve, you will be able to complete more tricks and manoeuvres on the board and so increase your aerobic fitness.

Mental Health

  • A great stress buster that will help limit anxiety and depression.
  • With speeds of about 20mph, the sheer exhilaration will put you on a high.
  • Sticking with it and mastering windsurfing will boost your confidence and help you feel positive about yourself and your abilities.

Rehab and Recovery

  • Always discuss any rehab or recovery plan with your health care provider.
  • Great for developing balance and flexibility.
  • Even if you are not hugely fit you can build up your windsurfing fitness through other sports including swimming, walking and other muscle training.

Social

  • It is advisable to seek proper instruction and so by doing this you will probably get to meet new people and be part of a group.
  • Once you have mastered windsurfing, (most people can get the basics in a day) you can enjoy it alone or in a group.

Weight management

  • Being physically strenuous, regular windsurfing will help you shed the pounds and keep them off!
  • Expert windsurfers can burn up to 1,000 calories per hour, but recreational windsurfers probably burn around 500 calories an hour.
