Enjoy Pembrokeshire

Dog Walking

Well controlled dogs are welcome members of any trip to Pembrokeshire, be it a stroll along the 186 miles of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path National Trail, the miles of country lanes, footpaths and bridleways, or at over fifty of the county's beaches. Many of the accommodation options in Pembrokeshire welcome dogs as do its attractions and frequent coastal buses.

Most of the beaches here welcome your best friend but between May-September there are dog restrictions at some of the most popular family beaches including:

  • Amroth
  • Saundersfoot
  • Tenby South, Harbour and Castle beaches
  • Lydstep
  • Dale
  • Broad Haven (north)
  • Newgale
  • Poppit
  • Whitesands and Tenby North beach have complete bans from May to September.

When walking in the Park there is a high possibility of coming into contact with wildlife and farm stock while the Coast Path is narrow and close to the cliff edge in places. By law you must not allow your dog to disturb and chase farm animals and wildlife. Roosting and ground nesting birds are particularly vulnerable while adders could potentially bite your dog. Please keep your dog under control at all times.

Dog mess is unpleasant and can cause infections and disease in humans and farm animals. It can also affect special soils that rare plants need to survive. There are byelaws requiring you to clean up after your dog on virtually all publicly used land in Pembrokeshire. Always clean up after your dog and dispose of the mess responsibly.

Top Tips

  • While on the beach please think about other users, children are often frightened even by friendly dogs so be considerate and if you can't keep them well controlled, keep them on a lead.
  • If cattle chase you and your dog it may be a good safety tip to let your dog loose and make your own way to safety.
  • For detailed dog restriction maps visit the Visit Pembrokeshire website.
